I was wondering what year neon motors would directly swap into a 96 dodge neon. My girlfeidns snaped her timing belt and most likely bent some valves so i am looking for a motor to swap in if the leakdown shows valve damage.

Thanks

Probably close to all of them.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding a '96 motor.

Put a 2.4L Stratus motor in there. Several people have done it. I think its a direct bolt in.

You can swap a 2.4 in it, but if you don't plan on making it fast I wouldn't go through the trouble. It's by no means a direct bolt in. Any 95-99 motor will swap in, but the 95's have the OBD I pcm's and alot of the connectors are different so you would have to swap alot of the sensors over from the old motor. But any 96-99 motor should be a direct bolt in. Later,

I'm guessing it had the SOHC (S4RE), the DOHC can be swapped farily quickly as long as you get the ecm.

SRT4 engine requires a standalone from everything I've read so far.

2.4 will require axles, mounts, and various other things. (I've looked into it)

Make that two of them, I finally have got the $$$ for a new dohc. (Basically I need the engine out of a 98-99 r/t)

I'd make sure it's got the MLS head gasket when you find one, if not haggle on the price since you're gonna want to go ahead and swap that out. (cost me a little over 100 in parts when I did mine if that helps)

the 95 sohc does not have obd 1 it is obd 2 just like all the other neons... yes the ecu looks differnt and it does have differnt connections but it is all obd 2... the 95 sohc also has a more agressive cam.. gaining about 5 hp and about 7 tq.. a 2.4 will swap in but will require a little work to make it fit.
