OK! I'm new to this website so this is my first post. I'm hopeing someone can help me.
I've tried to look around for information reguarding performance comparisons of Intercoolers for my car. I'm very unsure when trying to decide whether I should go GReddy( 13R Intercooler) OR Go with the Biggest Universal (trunk-mount) that can find OR whether I should choose a difference brand all together.... HKS, Spearco... etc. I've heard dual-tank and "special" inner-fin design. Ahhhhhhhhhh
My hope is that someone could enlighten me on what would be the best choice for my MR2 N/A.
Here is what I have done to the car so far...
3SGTE Swap:
Every part was hot-tanked, resurfaced, coated
Full Port and Polish
JE Pistons
Upgraded CT-26(Better Impeller fins, upgraded elbow and spindle upgrade)
Stock Intercooler. The engine is now 0 miles and is waiting for me to break it in.
My next goals will include the best intercooler alternative combined with a 2D Aquamist Meth/Water injection. Any thoughts?
Note: Struts have not been upgrade.. I'm thinking KYB adjustable?

Cool, AutoLab is currently where I am getting all of my work done.
Bill is da King_PIN!
He has exceeded every expectation that I had for my car. I'm just one of those people that likes to understand why something is better. I like to verify it through independent test's. Before I drop $$$ on a Intercooler setup I want to know all my functional alternatives.
I know brands tend to be very subjective though. Is there any independent data on each brand?

I assume your car is red, from your name.. You didn't happen to be on Newburg earlier today? I saw a clean red 2g MR2.

The MR2 Turbo before the one I have now had pretty much the identical setup as yours does now. Rebuilt head/block, JE's, upgraded CT-26 etc. Honestly your best route IMHO would be the GReddy side mount or any of the others like HKS out there, it has been proven to make great gains over stock even with the stock CT-26 (or upgraded CT). I was planning on getting one myself, but had a wreck and was forced to sell that engine. Depending upon the trim your wheel is on your turbo, a GReddy has seen ~+300whp on similar applications. A trunkmount would cool it down just as fine, but would also have much more piping and possibly some delay in pressure buildup. Somewhat unneeded for the size turbo. Unless you’re going to run anything bigger then a mid to upper size T3/T4, I don’t think you'd see a difference with a TMIC over SMIC. But again as said earlier ask Billy, and get some additional insight as well. I will someday have a larger turbo and nice TMIC setup in my new MR2T, but won't be for a while it looks:rolleyes:

COol cool! Thanks for all the info.
In reguards to the previous post... yes I can see how you would think that my car is red from my signin name, but its not. I have a white MR2.... hrmmm I need to change my login name...
how about... whitejade... nope thats gay. *cough*
Hrmm I'm gonna have to put some thought into this one. :eek3:

I went over too AutoLab today to see how my Duece was doin and I had a chance to speak with Bill extensively about Intercoolers.
He defined two main categories for me which ended by saying that Tank/Fin-Core style intercoolers are the best type. The difference in PSI loss against the normal tube/fin intercooler is about 2-3lbs.
While I'm talking about the BomAss work that he is doing on my MR. 2
I'll stop and plug his Biz: :mega: he happens to produce these Tank/Fin intercoolers at a killer price. If anyone wants one give him a call.

My .02 is use a side or custom top mount, and a mixture of WI and IC sprayers. Even a GReddy or custom unit will heatsoak, where the IC sprayer comes in. Water or c02, whichever. Do not rape your car, and your trunk, for a TMIC.
We just had an MR2 at our shop make something like 314 to the wheels on a stock long block, pump gas, 18psi, and GReddy sidemount. I think the car had some kind of T3/T4 on it. It was a very clean car and clean set up.

OK! well... i guess this starts a whole new problem then.
If any intercooler will become heatsoked, then whats the point of spending the money for a big-one, when you can hook up a $50 Co2 sprayer on your stock side-mount.
Furthermore... would it really be raping my car to go with a Trunmount? I never really use that space anyhow..... give me your thoughts on that....

Ok Norton.... does your system increase the lag and throttle response noticeable? In other words... does it cause more lag time and PSI loss?

no....atleast not with my turbo, spool time is the same as it was with the stock sidemount.

hey Eric, I talked with Nate the other day and he told me that he tuned the car at AMS. I asked him if he talked to an eric there and he wasn't sure.
His car uses our Level 2 MR2 system with a 60trim. He told me he made 377whp on 17psi and pump gas. Pretty sweet street power.

That was probibly it. Black or some dark color? I knew it was somewhere in the 300s. If I remember correctly I was tryin to talk him into goin for 400 and crankin da BOOST up a little.
We also got the other MR2 running at the shop. This thing is crazy, AEM, water to air, ful -AN sumped external fuel system, looks like an FP3065 or the smaller (not really sure why you would pay extra money for a hybrid turbo to bolt up to a mitsu, then just have a custom manifold made to fit the turbo), intake manifold, header, stroker motor (not sure about this at all), cams, headwork, etc, etc. You name it.
We are gonna get it a little street tuned and give it back to him to put some miles on it then its coming back to blast on the dyno.
Speaking of dynos................Check out the post in Area 51 about the King of the Dyno event coming up at AMS.
