How would I go about getting a permit in KY? Does anyone know what I have to do? I havent been to the court house yet so I figured I would post on here and get some answers. thanks

You have to take a written test I think. I believe you can go get a book for it, and take a written thing just like you do when you get your drivers permit. Then I don't think you can drive a motorcycle with a passenger on it until you actually get your liscense, which you have to drive thru some sort of course to get. Not that I've checked into it or anything ;)

All it is, is a simple written test. And I mean simple. A small fee, and you've got it.

Hmm, that should be pretty simple, guess I'll swing by the court house tomorrow. I dont want anyone riding with me until I feel 100% ready to have someone ride unless its around a parking lot or something. Thanks everyone

I was just looking at that Kentucky Driver's Manual you get when you get your permit and they have like 10 pages for motorcyclists so i guess it's the same book they would give you. It looks pretty easy imo.

I've got my permit, and yea, it's pretty straight forward. The test is basically a common sense test.

You can take a motorcycle safety class and that will count as the license test if you pass. You might also get a slight drop in insurence if your lucky.

Went to the courthouse today and took the test. I passed. I missed 4 questions out of 20(4 is the most you could miss), I didnt study or anything, pretty much common sense.

Hey If I'm reading the drivers manual correctly you can just get a motorcycle permit and keeep renewing it and never have to get a liscene, you just can't ever carry passengers. Right?

I believe there is somthing in the laws about riding at night with a permit as well. I could be wrong, but either way some cops dont know the rules. I was pulled over when I had my permit and the cop asked me how I was riding with just a permit. I explained I couldnt carry passengers with a permit and he said oh ok.

Permit laws, if I'm not mistaken, are basically as follows;

MUST wear a helmet
CANNOT carry any passengars
and cannot ride at night.

haha ive had my permit for 3 years.... going on 4 in november... hell its expired and i carry passengers, ride at night and on rare rare occasion ride without a helmet... (just down the street). been pulled twice for wheelies and luckily ran into nice cops that gave me a little lecture and ran my license number for bench warrants... so anyways JRock your cop was just silly....

yes, under a permit, you must wear a helmet at all times, no passengers, and no night time riding period

ahhhh....so that's Indiana?

I really didn't think I saw anything about that in the KY book, and I am positive no one told me that when I got my permit.

hey here's the book online http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/data.htm#dl scrowl down to the bottom of the page and you'll find the book in five sections, the fourth section contains stuff pretaining to motorcycles. I couldn't find ANYTHING about night riding, maybe could take a look at it and tell me what page it's on because I can't find it. Thanks

Those under age 18 with instruction permits cannot operate a motorcycle between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. unless they can demonstrate good cause for driving, such as an emergency, school function, or work. In addition, those with motorcycle instruction permits are not permitted to carry passengers.

There you go :)

If you are over 18 you can ride at night w/ a permit.
Thanks for all the misleading info :bigthumb:
