Does anybody know if the t-56 in the LS1 is the same as the Viper t-56? Or would it require a different bellhousing to mate up to the blocks?

The LT1's has T56s, I think the LS1's all use the MM12.
You would need a different bellhousing and the input shaft probably has the wrong number of splines.

i thought they were both t-56, but the lt1 required a different housing and input shaft. oh well, i don't think what i'm thinking about doing would be feasible anyway

Viper engine swap, eh?

LS1's are T56 too. I believe the 3/4 fork in the Viper is stronger as well.

lol, no i don't think so. more like a t-56 tranny mated to the 383 :hitit:
Same Gearing but a little more Beefer in Vipers
And i Heard alittle more aggressive 5th N 6th gear as well... no true facts (far as i know) but hear say... but all work on either motor with bell housing N proper Input shaft
LS1 T-56 has a larger Input shaft then LT1's
Oh and another little bit of info... (once again hear say)
That earlier T-56's were built by world class transmissions
But LS1's are Tremec because Tremec bought out world class.. Now i have no knowledge on either companies just something i heard way back in the day...
and Dave honestly i do not know if that would be best route (extreme low end torque car with T-56's low gearing..) i think honestly that the transmission is best loved @ spirited driving through da curves... but its just a thought.
but as you know my setup and i only have stock 3.42's and it seems my first gear just seems super short as well is 2nd gear..

Everything has pretty much been covered. I know McLoed makes a conversion kit for a 2nd gen FBody and the LS1 T56. Might want to chech with them.

Who knows. That another issue, this 383 won't be revving hardly at all so the gearing might not work out. 3 speed auto ownz me right now :(

I believe the Viper transmission case dimensions are a bit different as well. One of the domestic mags did a comparison a while back showing the differences, but I don't remember who did it.
As was said, LS1s have the T-56, but with a different input shaft.

93 had 2 6-speed transmissions, depending on the rear gear.
2.73 rear got M28 and 3.23 rear got M29, both had different gear ratios and are
rated weaker than the later T-56 transmissions.
94-97 LT1 T-56 is a Borg-Warner transmission. It uses a "pull" style clutch.
98-02 LS1 T-56 is a Tremec transmission, who bought the T-56 from Borg-Warner. It uses a "push" style clutch and has a longer input shaft due to the slave being mounted on the input shaft. This is one reason they have different bellhousings as well.
The Viper T-56 uses a larger diameter input shaft, plus I think the shifter is in a different location, further up on the tranny, where as the F-body shifter is on the tail housing. The Viper also uses a larger main shaft.
Is this a Chevy 383? If so, the best route to go would probably be to use a LT1 T-56, and then have it built if you are looking at pushing out a LOT of power. They are very strong transmissions, and can be built up even stronger. There are a few people running 9's with built T-56's.

Its a Mopar 383.

Not sure what would be needed to use a T-56 with that though, I'm not Mopar literate.

I have a Turbo 400 in the garage if you need one. Just a side note.

Well every car i've ever owned has been a damn auto, I'd like to go a different route. Found a site that sells conversions kits and Tremec K500 trannies to mate up to my engine and chassis, however for the tranny and accessories alone i'm looking at 3K. :lesigh: I guess I'll be going 3 spd auto for now.
