View Full Version : Good bike shop?

A friend of mine at work just got himself a nice '87 Ninja. The bike is aestetically almost perfect, and drives fairly well; but there are a few minor things wrong with it. He is not exactly a mechanic, and has looked into a few bike shops; but most seem to be more interested in ripping him off. Are there any good shops in town that can give him a good carb cleaning and general engine tune-up without fucking him or his wallet up? I know a few guys that are really good with bikes, but he's not comfortable with the "I know a guy who can..." line.

This is his first motorcycle, and he doesn't want to screw it up. Any good advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, how hard is it to clean the carbs on an '87 Ninja? The first place he checked out was going to put them in a sonic bath, but wanted to charge him like $500. Another place was going to do it by hand for about half as much, but they were going to store his bike outside, and with the amount of dust an pollen on the bikes outside - there is no way he wanted it out there with the engine apart. So how difficult would it be for hime to tear it apart and do it himself? He doesn't have a garage.

Thanks in advance!

Can you tell me a little about this shop that would lead you to such a recommendation? Like pricing fairness, quality of workmanship, customer service... This guy is real leery about takin his bike somewhere, and he is on a budget.

Thanks for your help, though. I'll be sure to mention it to him regardless.
